Space: Introduction

Residential houses will always be a personal space restricted for members only; however, there are always minor exceptions which allow invited guests to sojourn in one’s residence. Therefore, a residential house can be divided into two spaces: unrestricted residential space, which allows guests and all members to venture, and restricted residential space, which only allows all and/or selected members of the household to enter, with the circulation of the house that connects the two spaces together. This division of residential houses can be easily recognized in Central and Northern traditional houses in Thailand and Central and Southern traditional houses in Laos.
